Emergency Care of the Pregnant Patient

The Emergency Department (ED) is the first point of health care contact for some pregnant persons. This presentation reviews some of the strategies used by a Wisconsin hospital to optimize pregnancy outcomes for pregnant people who deliver in the ED.

Meet the instructors

Caitlin Pieschek, BSN, RN-BC, CEN 

Caitlin began her nursing career at Bellin Health as an LPN and is now Clinical Nurse Educator of Emergency Services. She holds pediatric and emergency nursing certifications and is pursuing a master’s in nursing education. Outside work, she enjoys life on her hobby farm with her husband and three sons.

Brynn Legois, BSN, RN-CEN

Brynn earned her RN degree at NWTC in Green Bay while working as a CNA in the Bellin ED. After a brief period as a travel nurse in Georgia, she returned to Bellin in 2022 and now serves as a Team Facilitator, trained in the charge nurse role.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe why all woman of gestational age of 12 weeks or greater should have a FHR documented, regardless of admission complaint.
  • Describe why those who have abdominal trauma should be monitored on maternity after ED discharge.
  • Describe why the pregnant patient should be viewed and treated with an understanding that they are two patients.
  • Describe why education of team members should include transparency and utilize real events and case studies.
