Cardiac Conditions in Pregnancy: Identification, Intervention, and Interdisciplinary Care

Despite improvements in care and declining mortality rates in women over the past decade, cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer of women. This presentation describes approaches to identify patients during the preconception and pregnancy periods who are at risk. The presentation reviews two more common cardiac conditions--arrhythmias and heart failure--and strategies to address them.

Meet the instructors

Kara Hoppe, DO, PhD

Dr. Hoppe is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at UW Health and professor in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UW School of Medicine and Public Health. She specializes in high-risk pregnancies and complex maternal medical conditions and is passionate about enhancing knowledge and improving pregnancy-related care.​


Allexa Licon, MD

Dr. Licon is currently practicing as a Non-Invasive Cardiologist at UW Madison. She has a special interest in an ever-growing field known as Cardio-Obstetrics, providing care for those who are at risk for developing cardiovascular conditions, or those who have known cardiovascular conditions, through their preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum journeys.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the preconception/pregnant patient who has a history or symptoms indicating a cardiology assessment to optimize pregnancy outcomes.
  • Define and describe CardioObstetrics.
  • Recognize patients with signs and symptoms of arrhythmias and how to manage them.
  • Recognize patients with signs and symptoms of heart failure and how to manage them.
  • Describe general recommendations for and importance of multidisciplinary care for optimizing outcomes.
