Part 2: Treatment and Management of Perinatal Hypertension

Series Description: This three-session series will empower birth workers to deepen their understanding of maternal hypertension and apply their knowledge and skills to their practice. Participants will gain the confidence and skills to recognize, respond to, and support birthing people at risk of or experiencing perinatal hypertension.

Activity Description: In session two, birth workers will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of maternal hypertension. They will also gain a deeper understanding of current medical and lifestyle interventions used to prevent, identify, manage, and treat maternal hypertension.

Meet the instructor

Kara Hoppe, DO, PhD

Kara Hoppe, DO, PhD, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at UW Health and a professor in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She specializes in high-risk pregnancies and complex maternal medical conditions and is passionate about enhancing knowledge and improving pregnancy-related care.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of maternal hypertension across the perinatal period.      
  • Explain key strategies to prevent, manage, and treat maternal hypertension​.     
  • Accurately obtain and interpret blood pressure readings in perinatal populations.
  • Effectively teach others how to accurately self-monitor their blood pressure​.
