Infant and Child Outcomes in Substance-Exposed Pregnancy

Perinatal substance use can have a significant impact on a pregnant person and the fetus. One of the challenges is determining what effects are attributable to substances and what impact the environment may have. Additionally, the available literature may be unclear in differentiating those variables. This presentation will review what is known with fair certainty and what the gaps in our knowledge are.

Meet the instructor

Elizabeth Goetz, MD, MPH

Dr. Elizabeth Goetz is a professor of pediatrics at UW Madison and works as a newborn hospitalist at Meriter Hospital in Madison WI. Dr. Goetz has been caring for families affected by NAS/NOWS for over 20 years.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Identify two strategies for reducing risk of harm to infants with prenatal substance exposure in the first year of life.
  • Discuss known effects of prenatal substance use on infant and child development. 
  • Describe limitations in our understanding of long-term outcomes of substance exposure.
