Affected by Substance Use Disorder and Their Families
In 2015, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine published ABM Clinical Protocol #21, Guidelines for Breastfeeding and Substance Use or Substance Use Disorder. In 2023, the ABM updated the publication. The new recommendations included the recommendations that "individuals who discontinue non-prescribed substance use by the time of delivery hospitalization can be support to initiate breastfeeding." This presentation reviews current information specific to human milk feeding and substance use.
